Area growers endure cold snap threat to early blossoms
Western Maryland fruit growers report 17 percent of apple trees and 38 percent of peach trees had bloomed by Sunday as mild weather earlier in the year brought premature blossoms. Bob Black of Catoctin Mountain Orchards described sleepless hours and hard work to protect crops during the freezing temperatures that hit Thursday night, with temperatures around 15 degrees at dawn.

MARC Cuts Brunswick Line Service Under New CSX Deal
MARC riders on the Brunswick line face June schedule changes after a new operating agreement with CSX. An altered timetable may see an earlier final train from Union Station and a later first train from Brunswick to Washington, with some flag stops at Dickerson and Boyds reduced. MARC aims to expand to Frederick, requiring two trains each in morning and afternoon. The talks, ongoing since last July, balanced expansion with CSX freight needs as MARC ridership doubled and CSX freight grew. Maryland currently pays CSX 15 million annually for track use under a long expired but extended agreement amid Conrail’s CSX/Norfolk Southern split.
