Shriver Homestead and Mill Preserve Union Mills Legacy
The Shriver Homestead in Union Mills Maryland founded by Andrew and David Shriver sits as a historic four room home expanded to 23 rooms by 1860. The site includes a gristmill, tannery, cannery and blacksmith shop and served as stagecoach stop school and post office. The private museum run by the Homestead Foundation opens eleven rooms to the public with artifacts and rooms connected to Washington Irving, J.E.B. Stuart and Sargent Shriver lineage. The mill has just been restored and will resume grinding corn from late April with tours offered April 30 to December weekends and holidays.
