Nuns Win Battle Over Coal Firm’s SEC Move
In Knorville Tennessee a group of nuns at the Blue Thamond coal firm claimed victory at a stockholders meeting. They backed a reform coalition, though a sponsored resolution failed. The nun leaders pressed for SEC registration to oversee corporate dealings, saying the company has resisted registration to avoid costly paperwork. The meeting saw about 9 percent stockholder turnout. The company cites regulatory and financial concerns, while the Sisters of Loreto pursue governance changes. The firm has faced numerous mining safety citations since 1970, including two explosions in 1976 at Scotia mine.

The group also met Zbigniew Brzezinski and were photographed for national broadcasts.
