Kennedy orders broader aid to Appalachian region
President Kennedy said federal agencies should give greater assistance to the Appalachian states where 5 percent of the labor force supports over 11 percent of U.S. unemployment. He urged Congress to provide 500 million dollars for accelerated public works to put more men to work. Governors including Harrison Jr. and Clement attended the briefing. Kennedy directed department heads to review programs and craft this year's comprehensive economic development plan for the area.
