American heavy bombers and fighters attacked Brunswick and surrounding air facilities in a major daylight raid. Reports claimed heavy German losses and clashes with German fighters, while Berlin broadcast boasted of repelling an assault on Berlin.
In Circuit Court Chief Judge Edward Delaplaine awarded 11 month old Margaret Elizabeth Drury permanent custody to Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Baker of East South Street. The Ramsburgs of Brunswick had sought adoption after the Bakers petitioned on September 14 1943. Six hearings preceded the morning ruling based on the executive secretary of the Frederick County Children's Aid Society recommendation. The child will be renamed Betty Lee Baker.

Lt Col Cliff Hatcher forwards the request after Roosevelt’s help and Barbara’s father is delayed by his draft board until after Easter.
Baltimore April 8. Galena. Tait defends his support for Gov. Thomas E. Dewey for the Republican presidential nomination and says as Maryland Republican chairman it was his duty to gauge party sentiment. He repudiates a “babel of claims and charges” from his New York conference with Dewey.
New York April. Effective Monday the Army and Navy will receive an extra 32,000,000 cigars monthly, withdrawn from civilian trade, per Cigar Institute director Harry W. McHose. The total to 91,000,000 monthly will be allocated to domestic military and naval stations based on the number of men served.
Springfield Illinois April 8 Mrs Eleanor Martin reported a home fire caused no structural damage but ruined a ham in the oven and with it she lost the last of her ration points a small personal loss amid the incident.
Worldwide Easter observances for American forces span Italy, Britain, and North Africa with sunrise services in Hyde Park and front line areas. The Bishop of London will preach at 7 30 a m and a 100 voice Negro soldier choir will sing in a British port city as radio broadcasts reach isolated troops.
Chicago April 8 police searched a Rogers Park garage after Mildred Roloff and Ann Gerber reported a car trunk scene with a hand and a foot protruding. A licensed car traced to a wholesale cigar firm led to a mechanic who uncovered the culprit device and the trunk rattle. The case was declared solved.
Leonardtown reports a large frame Scotland Beach hotel near Point Lookout burned to the ground in 45 minutes yesterday. The Morgan owners, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Morgan, were in Washington at the time. This marked the district's second major fire within 24 hours.
London reports a small section of Flanders flooded by German actions destroying canal banks. Inbel Belgium agency says major river and sea dikes remain intact for now, though preparations exist for possible breaches at Allied landings.

A group of seventy-five white and colored men from Draft Board One left for pre-induction physical examinations in Baltimore. Of eighty-something reported Friday, about twelve failed to pass. others were accepted for service in Army or Navy. The group included many with occupational deferments that were recently canceled. These men may be called after furloughs end, as part of a supplemental army call linked to a Selective Service ruling for ages 18 to 26.
A Tokyo radio reported a 21 aircraft American raid on northern Hainan Island off the South China coast on Thursday. It said 15 bombers and six fighters attacked and that Japanese forces and ground installations sustained some damage.
Canberra Australia April 8 Army minister Francis E Forde announced the Australian Army would be cut by 90000 men within the next 12 months. He said 20000 of the redundancies would be released to industry and that the reduction rate would continue.
Reuters reported a Japanese communique claiming Kohima fell Thursday, 60 miles north of Imphal, severing the Manipur road link to the railhead. Mountbatten’s bulletin noted continued pressure but no major engagements, with Allied troops improving positions north of Imphal and fighting to clear the Tiddim Imphal route.
Major General Frederick H Osborn, Army morale chief and noted scientist, will address the Associated Press publishers luncheon in New York on April 24. Osborn, head of the morale division since 1941, was announced by AP President Robert McLean. He previously led the War Department Education and Recreation committee and chaired the Selective Service advisory committee.
In Pocatello Idaho on April 8 MarinesPic Lawrence J Hanson of Rigby Idaho needed extra size shoes. He had been going barefoot part of the time to save his last pair. Sgt Wallace Hanson found a large pair in a local store but postal clerks say the footwear weighs too much for overseas delivery. Special permission is being sought.
The Japanese Comet agency reported via wireless dispatch that about 200 American B 24 bombers raided Truk Island Thursday morning. It claimed two bombers were shot down and no damage was caused to ground installations.
Mrs Ben A Ruffin will travel from Richmond Virginia to Savannah Georgia for the launching of the Liberty ship Ben A Ruffin next Tuesday. The vessel honors the late president of Lions International and was financed by bonds issued by Virginia Lions clubs.
New York city selective service headquarters announced a nationwide halt on inducting men over 26 who contribute to essential agricultural war production or war support activities. Col. Arthur V. McDermott confirmed the order to state directors, directing postponement of processing for those 26 and over while under-26 efforts are completed. The directive, from Major General Hershey, allows individual exceptions and rescinds prior instructions to fill shortages.

Burns of Brunswick an employee at the Brunswick B. and Q. railroad shops and president of the Brunswick Shopcraft Federation No. 17 was appointed a member of the War Manpower Commission Appeal Board for Frederick County. The board handles appeals from employers and employees and arranges hearings by local representatives familiar with management labor in the area.
Dispatches report Germans and Rumanians fleeing Odessa as Red Army encircles the Black Sea port. The front line tightens with pockets of enemy forces split by the Odessa corridor, while Tarnopol and Razdelnaya remain focal points in the Soviet westward offensive.
Swiss Minister Charles Bruggmann met with Secretary Hull in Washington to seek an explanation and measures to prevent recurrence after American Liberator bombers accidentally hit Schaffhausen.
