Elderly collector recalls Cold War rescues by Mrs Byerly
The 90 year old recounts aiding Americans held in Soviet prisons after Stalin's death. She helped release Rev. Now in Frederick, she volunteers, paints, and pursues Hood College courses while reflecting on glasnost and perestroika.

Frederick considers trolley revival along East Street route
Mr. Metka proposed a Frederick trolley system in the 1990s with eight restored cars at about seven million dollars, funded by business owners and the Maryland Mass Transit Administration. If approved, routes would connect downtown to a southwest transport center, tying into buses and taxis. The plan recalls early 1900s Frederick transit and suggests a charm and traffic relief for tourists and locals.

Local growers face early bloom and ongoing freeze risk
Growers report crops blooming far earlier than normal with hopes that heavy peach blooms offset frost losses. Farmers express concern over remaining four to six weeks and the risk of another hard freeze, while apple cherry and strawberry crops suffer less. Several producers in Thurmont and Adamstown report varying losses across apricot pear plum and peach crops as cold, still air hinders growth and planting.
