Maryland Senators Fight To Fix Farmland Preservation Deal

Maryland lawmakers backed bills to strengthen the states farmland easement program after it failed to compete with developers offers. Since 1977 the state purchased about 79,482 acres with average easement prices near 853 dollars per acre, while developers bought over 194,125 acres in seven years. The new measure raises state and local funding and grants more flexibility to pay higher easement prices, aiming to keep farmers from selling for development.
