Bridge collapse on Interstate 90 near Thruway prompts inspections

One body recovered as floodwaters receded after a four lane bridge on the Thruway collapsed. About two dozen rescuers with floodlights watched debris including refrigerators and benches drift away. The incident prompted inspection of 19 bridges with more than 100 checked by nightfall and no major problems found. Officials signaled possible additional closures. Witnesses described vehicles and a tractor trailer plunging into the creek. The collapse occurred around 10:48 a.m. and followed by sagging sections and fall of the span. Authorities noted a prior rehabilitation and a 1946 inspection. Lawmakers called for hearings on bridge safety in the Northeast.
