Hand Made Shoes Preserve Old World Craft in Vienna
In Vienna, fifth generation shoemaker Carl Scheer runs R Scheer and Sons, once royal courtiers for the Hapsburgs, now crafting totally hand-made leather shoes for an international clientele. Customers pay about $475 for about ten months of work, with fitting in Vienna and mail orders thereafter. Scheer, 63, and his family employ eight assistants to produce roughly 300 pairs annually.
