Florida Governor Seizes Manatee Schools Over Desegregation
Gov. Claude Kirk assumed custodial control of Manatee County schools and ordered pupils and teachers to ignore a Supreme Court desegregation transfer plan. He suspended the local school board and superintendent, pledging to educate children despite federal orders and saying the action would be reviewed by the courts. More than 150 administrators attended the briefing as parents sought guidance on where to send students. The desegregation plan would have boosted busing and reassignments to reach an 80 percent white to 20 percent black classroom mix.

Frederick officials and the Taskers Chance Garden Club agreed to remove several maple trees at Courthouse Park to improve grass conditions. County architect John Stann will use about 200 dollars this year for park work, with 1971 funds already budgeted. Woman Hurt In Accident At Monocacy Village
Frederick woman Della Darby 78 from Brooklawn Apartments sustained a nose laceration in a morning traffic accident in the Monocacy Village Shopping Center parking lot. She was taken to hospital by United Ambulance at 10 20 a.m. X rays were ordered to check for other injuries. Police investigation not complete at press time.

Four California Highway Patrol officers were killed late Sunday night after stopping two men driving a gunpoint vehicle on a mountain freeway. A gun battle followed a raid on a house five hours later. one suspect wounded, others fled in a red late model sedan. The slain officers were Walter C. Frago 23 Roger D. Sam Shepard Dies in Columbus After Flu Illness
Dr. Sam Shepard former Cleveland osteopath died at his Columbus home after a brief illness his wife Colleen said he had the flu for several days and would not see a doctor. Shepard 45 had been living with his father in law since last summer and previously faced a murder trial in which his first wife Marilyn was found dead in Bay Village Ohio. he was convicted then later acquitted after two trials and appeals.

C Grant Delphey, a Frederick County elder born April 7, 1866 near Detour, died at Frederick Nursing Home after a long illness. He operated a Market and Seventh Streets blacksmith shop, was an early acetylene welder, and remained active into his mid seventies. A Calvary United Methodist Church member, he was devoted to the Leaders Bible Class which honored him annually.

Local Man Beaten Robbed Near His Frederick Home
A Frederick man, Charles Francis O'Brien, 48, on West Fourth Street, was picked up by two men who drove him out into the country and beat and robbed him of 18 dollars near Manor Woods Road just after midnight Sunday.
