Schools Are Behind Ike Informed By White House Panel

Washington The committee for the White House conference on education told President Eisenhower that schools have fallen behind both public aspirations and capabilities yet praised much of today’s schools. The 50,000 word report urged action to raise public interest, noting schools now affect national welfare and serve as the chief engine of opportunity. The panel unanimously said desegregation must be worked out locally within Supreme Court intent. Federal aid split three ways, with a majority favoring limited construction grants to all states. others urged loans or broader aid. The report, tied to Eisenhower’s 1954 State of the Union call, depicts a nation short of buildings and teachers but with enough resources to fix shortages through reorganized districts and better use of funds.
