Senate group presses for action on 40 hour week
A Senate faction led by Pepper and Lee plans to move a labor measure within two weeks to suspend the 40 hour work week and bar union practices in war plants. They aim to bypass the Education and Labor Committee and win broad Democratic and Republican support to force floor debate before April 20. The group argues the public demands a 48 hour cap and curbs on excessive union fees, despite opposition from Chairman Thomas and Senate leaders.
