Go Ahead On Housing For Detrick Approved

Camp Detrick officials were advised that their request for 225 Wherry Act family housing units has been approved by Army and FHA authorities in Baltimore. Private contractors will build the 26 one bedroom, 124 two bedroom and 75 three bedroom units, with rents from 68.50 to 90 dollars monthly. Construction should start by June 1 and occupancy is expected in about six months. units will be near the new brick family quarters and allocated to military and civilian personnel.

Peace Group Duped By Reds

The House Un-American Activities committee reports that the Maryland Committee for Peace deceived sponsors and listed unauthorized names at Johns Hopkins University. It cites Victor Lowe and Jon Carstein among others who resigned or protested, urging those listed as sponsors to come forward for record corrections. The Maryland group is portrayed as a peace front used by Communists to hide true aims amid a broader market rally in railroad shares.

70,000 Retail Stores Affected By New Order

Washington reports the government extended its retail margin type price control to about 76,000 more stores with $7 billion in annual consumer sales. Items now under percentage markups include musical instruments radios phonographs housewares notions luggage sporting goods and silverware. The order amends ceiling price regulation 7 and becomes effective April 10. OPS says the amendment moves these goods from the general price freeze to the pricing chart system.

Russian Reinforcements Sent To Manchuria

Taipei Formosa April 3 Gen Chang Yi Ting says Russia has steadily reinforced troops in Manchuria since the Korean war began. He cites combat troops and air squadrons but cannot estimate their strength. McKeldin Likely Chooses GOP on Roads Board

Governor McKeldin faces a June 1 effective date for the county roads bill which will shape the County Roads Board. With three members from the same party prohibited, Republicans are favored for the five member board. The new Board of Registry and Election Supervisors will oversee appointments and is expected to name a Democratic member before June 1. The Republican appointee would be the election supervisors clerk.

Allied drive drives deep into Red Korea near Parallel 38

An American task force advanced nearly eight miles inside Red Korea at the spearhead of a UN drive along the western and central fronts. The Eighth Army reported light resistance near Chal north of Parallel 38 as Ridgway joined the border crossing troops. Air and artillery supported the assault amid entrenched Reds and dugouts, with steep hills hindering progress over two days of heavy fighting.

The New York Daily News, via Washington dispatch, reports Japanese troops merged with the Communist Chinese Manchurian army massing on the Korean border in Manchuria. Washington April 5 The Army will start midmonth rotating men long in Korea combat. Fresh troops will replace veterans under Gen Douglas MacArthur policy. First sailors should sail within weeks. Rosenbergs Lose Bid. Sentenced to Death in Espionage Case

In New York April, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were sentenced to death in federal court for atomic espionage. Co-defendant Morton Sobell received 30 years. Judge Irving Kaufman labeled the case a graver crime than murder and set executions for the week of May 21, noting the law allows death in wartime espionage. Sobell faces 2 p.m. sentencing tomorrow.
