Maryland farmers harvested 1,637,000 acres in 1945 including truck crops, 1,714,000 in 1944, and the ten year average 1,643,000. Wet planting season reduced yields for most crops though corn reached a record state high of 37 bushels per acre. Fruit crops suffered from late freezes and heavy rainfall, with commercial apples at 689,000 bushels the smallest on record.
Wayne Hickman an 18 year old from Lovettsville Virginia received 1000 00 in two 500 checks from relatives of two Navy aviators who perished in a Beechcraft crash in the Blue Ridge area last May Hickman found the wreckage while seeking ginseng and later visited the airmen s families in East Liverpool Ohio and Yonkers New York The Navy had repeatedly failed to locate the missing craft and Hickman said the money will be put in the bank with no definite plan for use
Mrs. Catherine L Timmins of this city filed a $15,000 damage suit in Circuit Court against Alfred N Robertson a local taxi driver. The action seeks compensation for injuries and property damage alleged in the incident.
Court notices show several divorces including Stonesifer vs Stonesifer Isaac vs Isaac and Black vs Black, plus property transfers like J E Thomas to the Mayor and Aldermen of Frederick. Marriage licenses issued include Roelke and Carter ages 21 and 19, Baker and Dixon ages 18 and 19, Pike and Everhart ages 32 and 24, all in nearby cities.
Washington on April 4 reports a Senate vote failing to pass a minimum wage boost tied to parity reform. Farm state Senators backed an amendment to prevent price increases on farm goods, a plan President Truman opposed.
Barkley called a recess over final action on a farm measure tied to a parity price formula. Pepper warned the administration that the plan could be killed as the farm amendment fades. Administrations forces trimmed proposals from broader reform to a 60 cent minimum wage, with no coverage change.
Cole's Circus will perform in Frederick on May 2 with two shows on the lot beside McCurdy Field. Matinee at 3 p.m. and a night show at 8 p.m. The act features fifty trained wild animals and Tex King the cowboy singer. Capt. Christy performs a dangerous animal act.
A sensational 35 motorized circus is heading to Frederick with bareback riders acrobats and clowns led by Prof. Guy. The troupe claims to be the year's only big entertainment here and features 200 performers. Meanwhile a birthday dinner honors Mrs. Mattie C Snapp at the Foster home in Charles Town W Va on March 31 with many guests and a post dinner flight from Martinsburg airport.
Dr Henry I Stahr spoke on character analysis at the B n a i Brith monthly dinner at the Francis Scott Key Hotel. A J Ellin announced funds to furnish radios for disabled veterans at Newton D Baker Hospital Martinsburg W Va. Entertainment included solos by Anne Marie Budde with Groff on piano. visitors included Max Cohn and Dr J Falk with six Fraderioltanians.
Mrs Bernard W Zimmerman receives word her husband Bernard Zimmerman has been promoted from Technician 5th grade to Technician 4th grade. He is stationed at Camp McCoy Wisconsin awaiting orders. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Paul B Zimmerman of Frederick Route 4. A farmer in India is known as a kisan.
