Chicago April 5 Joe Walcott the welterweight champion and Fred Russell of Minnesota fought to a four round draw. Russell at six feet four inches and 225 pounds proved unable to trouble Walcott who at five feet six inches and 142 pounds landed key blows. Russell was knocked to the floor once and remained game through the bout. In the prelim Mike Shreck of Reading knocked out Buck Montgomery in four rounds.
London April 5. Severe fighting on March 31 near Hartz river in Transvaal. General Kitcheners force clashed with Delarey and Kemp Lord Kitchener reports Boer reinforcements attacked flanks. Fifteen hundred Boers suffered heavy losses and withdrew. Canadian Rifles distinguished themselves with Lt Bruce Carruthers holding a post to the last man killed or wounded.
Brussels dispatch cites Dr. Leyds receiving a message from Lourenco Marques that General Botha’s force moves toward the Natal border. Durban noted April 3 that traffic north of the Tugela river was halted and Ladysmith Dundee and New Castle town guards were mobilized to full strength.
Salt Lake City Utah April 5 Clyde Felt 15 years old admitted he killed Sam Collins the aged watchman at the Wasatka mines by slitting his throat in a cave above Warm Springs. He hid the body and buried bloodstained clothing later. Police theorize moral degeneracy and a conspiracy among local boys while other statements suggest the tale may be incomplete.
A H Tomlin of 1614 Moramensing avenue employed at American Agricultural Chemical Works in Philadelphia was crushed to death when his foot caught in a switch frog and a Baltimore and Ohio freight train backed into the yard. His body was left on the tracks as the train moved away. Also reported, the American Philosophical Society held two sessions with an astronomy focused morning and a banquet commemorating its first annual general meeting.
Atlantic City authorities began repairing the burned district after a $756,000 loss. The boardwalk will reopen for promenaders, with brick or stone fireproof beachfront limits discussed. Relic hunters and guards surrounded the site as new fire engines were ordered and a special election for a city charter considered.

Senator Platt notes minority opposition and a proposed amendment linking reciprocity to a Platt-amendment treaty with Cuba. Also reports on fires and personal misfortune in St Louis Grand Rapids Wilharsport and other towns including a fatal kerosene lamp accident and a mayoral candidate stricken with typhoid fever.
William H. Lane was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to death by hanging just nine hours after Eloise Jarden, seven, died from a bullet wound. The Philadelphia judge declared murder in the first degree, following Lane’s full confession. The case drew sharp public reaction as Lane’s quick trial and sentence were noted. Governor Stone planned no delay in issuing the death warrant, with execution date to be fixed after certification of the court record.
Shrim an R Hopkins of Dale Wisconsin died yesterday aged 73 years following the death of his wife who passed away about 10 weeks earlier at age 93. If they had lived until May 24 they would have celebrated their diamond wedding in Appleton Wisconsin April.
