Maryland Farm Heir Inheritance Tax Bill Faces Senate Vote
A proposed Maryland bill seeks to curb the burden of inheriting farmland by exempting farms of 50 acres or more from state inheritance tax, with conditions. Direct heirs face 1 percent tax, indirect heirs 10 percent, and penalties apply if land loses farmland status within 15 years or is sold in five years. Federal taxes apply above $400,000, and experts note high valuations even for discounted parcels. The bill could reach a House vote as early as today.

Police Budget Pressures Raise City Overtime Fears
Maj Raffensberger cites limited resources and rising costs as police expenses swallow most of the budget. He notes NYC and DC patrols show 52 and 68 officers per 1000 residents, while the city would need 23 more officers to restore the ratio, a demand deemed unrealistic. Michael Blankenship says population growth and commuters justify higher spending, predicting 14 more officers by 2000 to maintain 214 per 1000 residents.
