Legion chief urges universal training as wartime safeguard

Paul Griffith of the American Legion urged public support for universal military training at a Lions Club hosted meeting for 150 veterans and club members at the Francis Scott Key Hotel. He warned that only a strong industrial base and national preparedness can deter aggression, citing Russia's missile tests from Spitzbergen and past war lessons. He outlined four months of basic training for 18 year olds, ROTC, National Guard or Naval Reserve, and stressed the plan is a Legion objective for national defense rather than compulsory peacetime service.
