Federal grand jury indicts William G. Corbett August W. Machen and George E. Lorenz on conspiracy in buying straps for mail pouches. A prior 1900 indictment with Mrs Lorenz is noted. present case omits her name. Three separate regional items follow about accidents and a new appointment.
An old advertisement describes signs of disease such as a poor complexion weakness and emaciation and claims Dr Chase s Blood and Nerve Food restores missing substances to blood and nerves. It promises renewed flesh strength vitality and color to pale or frail people and offers a book for free with sales guaranteed by Clinton Be Main Linggist Frederick 3rd.
An advertisement asserts scalp dandruff caused by a germ leads to hair loss. It promotes Newbro's Herpicide as a chemical remedy that kills the germ, stops falling hair, and preserves growth, claiming results and offering samples via mail from The Herpicide Co. in Detroit.
A dispatch from St Petersburg reports rumors of cabinet reshuffles including General Trepoff for interior and Count Lamsdorff returning to the Italian embassy. It also notes Vice Admiral Rojestvenskys voyage to Vladivostok with the second Pacific squadron, lacking a fixed route, and no plan to join Nebogatoff. Also Warsaw reports police attacks and Mukden relief efforts for Chinese refugees numbering 109000, with Japan using Chinese labor.
Tangier reports quote Emperor William asserting Germany would maintain absolute equality of economic and commercial rights with Morocco and act directly with the sultan. He said reforms should follow Islamic law, Morocco seeks peace, and he would announce details later. Also, Storey Cotton agent Frank Smith died after a second poison dose following attempted suicide linked to company troubles.
In Ziegler near Benton Illinois a gas explosion in Joseph Leiter’s mine entombed about 50 miners. Four bodies recovered. rescue hampered as main shaft collapsed forcing work through an air shaft. At least one injured miner and a doomed Rolla Campbell unable to live. Union miners rushed to help, amid ongoing strikes and ventilation concerns raised by C. E. Childers last October.
In Springfield Ohio on April 4 a large crowd gathered to burn Joseph Kempler’s saloon in the levee district amid prior riot fears. Police surrounded and patrolled the venue, arresting several disorderly men as the crowd was kept dispersed and saloon closures spread across the area.
In Cincinnati on April 4 lawyers for J Morgan Smith and his wife related to Van Patterson argued to block extradition as part of habeas corpus proceedings. Attorney Shay sought time to respond, claiming the Cincinnati information postdates the writ and that the captives may be unlawfully held. Judge Spiegel considered witnesses to prove legality or release.

New York Superintendent of Insurance Francis Hendricks begins an investigation into the Equitable Life Assurance Society after Governor Higgins and President James W. Alexander announce steps. Miss May Devere of Hoboken New Jersey collapsed from a sudden cerebro-spinal meningitis attack and was found unconscious on a sidewalk then locked in a police station charged with intoxication. After three hours in a cell her condition was realized and she was taken to a hospital in critical status. The intoxication charge was withdrawn by order of a police magistrate once the facts became known.
An anonymous Pittsburgh letter to Governor Stokes signed M. BE. Z.7 claims the writer killed Max Wallenburg and five others, says Oscar Laskar is innocent and should be spared, and asserts the writer also murdered Wallenburg and carried out other executions in Passaic county.
J Frank Cordova former Methodist minister was jailed for a term after abandoning his wife and assaulting her. He was taken to the station handcuffed by a large crowd amid strong protests. The case arose after his alleged duplication with choir singer Miss Jala Bowne at the South River church. Nearby report notes widow of Harvey Fisk dies in Atlantic City at age 72 from heart disease. Her body to be moved to Ewing for interment.

The Daily Mirror says Pope Pius IX gave consent to the betrothal of King Alfonso of Spain to Princess Patricia of Connaught with King Edward's consent noted. Princess Victoria Patricia Helen Elizabeth, daughter of the Duke of Connaught, was born March 17, 1885. Alfonso was born March 17, 1838.
