The governor signed local bills yesterday making Frederick County laws. Re enacted Game Laws, appointed a notary at Brunswick Berlin, amended justices of the peace law, prohibited Park Mills, taxed in error payments, amended New Market charter, allowed Frederick mayor to commit tramps to the House of Correction, banned liquor sale at Arab Chapel, prohibited roaming horses cattle and other domestic animals in Liberty, and amended Middletown laws.
The bill for voter registration tightens inquiry into legal residence, targeting those who work in one place but claim a former home. It especially reaches migratory classes including colored people, aiming at political colonization. A key provision uses a registration list copy at elections with name age place of birth and other voter details.
The Australian ballot law passed by the Legislature applies to Frederick county and enforces a single official ballot. An amendment allows a non English speaker to be accompanied at the booth rail by a companion who speaks English. The companion cannot enter the voting stall but may assist judges to locate the voter's name on the list.
A log house occupied by Mr Michael Borshett near the water works two miles from Westminster burned Wednesday night. Borshett and his wife were away visiting and returned to find only smoldering ruins. The building was insured for 250 dollars with the Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Carroll County. The blaze is believed incendiary. The note adds Mr C E Derr’s butcher shop on West Patrick street now painted blue and renamed the Blue Front Meat Store.
