Hormones: A New Insect Control May Cut DDT Drawbacks
PHOENIX CAP Texas scientist Dr. Walter J. Burdette of the University of Texas at Houston reports oddball hormones found in house flies and other insects could yield a powerful, environmentally safer insect killer. He says these hormones regulate growth and reproduction, may kill pests when applied in proper concentrations, and could root out resistance to DDT. The hormones, including juvenile hormone and a differentiator, come from insects and some plants and have been produced in labs. Burdette notes U S Agriculture and drug firms pursue practical uses, with sterilization via male insects transferring hormones as a potential control method.
