The first building association on record began in 1836 in Frankford, now part of Philadelphia. It offers two loan methods for members: first mortgage on real estate or loans against shares at four-fifths of paid-in amounts. Members repay $87.50 on a $100 loan, can pay off anytime, and the association keeps loans active with weekly payments. Over $25,900,000 handled with no member losses.
