Iraqi Baath Party newspaper and the official Iraqi News Agency say Saddam loyalists will purge Kurdish areas in northern Iraq within days. They forecast purging Kurdish resistance in major urban centers such as Erbil and grant limited autonomy afterward.
Iraqi soldiers moved into allied territory within 1000 meters of the Kuwaiti border and were warned to retreat as U S military commanders urged compliance. The report notes Kurdish rebel claims, journalist exits from northern Iraq, and refugee flows as Kurds endure dissension with allies.
Soldiers of the 153rd Medical Detachment at Fort Detrick will take a week of rest after desert duty in Saudi Arabia and Panama. Nine service members recently returned from Saudi deployment as the unit, attached to USAMMA, prepared for possible rapid deployment.
The Maryland General Assembly approved an 11.6 billion dollar fiscal 1992 spending plan sending it to Governor Schaefer.
