Stonecutter Falls To Death At Washington Cathedral
An 80 year old master stonecutter fell from a scaffold on the western nave of Washington Episcopal Cathedral and died. James Smith, a carpenter, on the same scaffold heard a fall but could not determine if Rath lost his balance or had a heart attack. Rath had worked on the cathedral for 12 years, contributing to its remaining 48 year build. He came from a family of artists and had carved in Italy, France, and elsewhere before moving to the United States. He was unmarried with no local relatives and had residences in Baltimore and an apartment in Washington. Deer hunters in Montana may pay only 20 dollars for a 1935-56 license for deer and antelope, a cut from 100 dollars for nonresidents, as lawmakers respond to damage claims in eastern Montana.

State Crab Season Opens Amid Cold Chesapeake Weather
Crisfield reports the 1955 crab season opens with watermen hopeful for strong demand and better prices. Cold mud and windy conditions delay action as crabs stay at the bottom, but officials expect pots to multiply soon and many small crabs to appear in tributary rivers of the bay.
