Fire kills father and six Mitchells in Johnstown
Johnstown Pa April 2 six persons died in a Prosser Hollow fire that destroyed the Mitchell home. The victims include Philip P Mitchell aged 53, Jacob P Mitchell 14, Mary Martha Mitchell 72, Charles Edward Mitchell 11, Jesse M Mitchell 8 and Alice Frances Mitchell 6. Mrs Mitchell and Sophia were awakened by heat and smoke but neighbors could not help. The father tried to fetch water, perished. Mrs Mitchell seriously burned but life uncertain. House reduced to ruins.

Family tragedy as Lane murders family then plans escape
William Lane a colored servant allegedly killed Mrs Furbush and her two daughters at 652 North Fifteenth street in a premeditated robbery. He shot Eloise and Madeline after luring them upstairs, then attempted to flee before police caught him at the railroad station. Eloise identified Lane, who confessed his crimes and claimed the wife would have him arrested for theft.
