Senate Rejects Abolish Plan for Maryland Housing Authority
ANNAPOLIS AP Gov. Mandel won in the Senate 24 to 17 when a bill to abolish the new state housing authority was rejected. The House had approved a similar bill. The authority, created by 1970 law, faced referendum defeat last November but a court ruling questioned the referendum's validity. The issue centers on land condemnation powers and the authority’s role in expanding housing for low and middle income groups. Mandel said he favors keeping the law on the books, despite earlier statements.
