State roads chief weighs conduit plan to hide wires
John N. Mackall, chair of the State Roads Commission, questions the expense of burying conduits for roadside wires. The telephone company cites costs near 22 000 per mile for cables and 35 million overall to remove lines on 300 miles, plus repeater gear. Forestry officials note slow tree planting will gradually conceal lines, arguing underground wiring remains unlikely to spread quickly.
