Ulster Free State Pact Praised as Peace Move in Ireland
LondonApril 1 The Free State party in Ireland was strengthened by the Ulster and Free State leaders agreement for pacification of the island. Churchill told the House of Commons that the accord gave hope of North South cooperation and a peaceful future. He cited measures to curb Belfast sectarian warfare and the need for unity under the treaty. The pact includes protection for Ulster Catholics, a ceasefire by the Irish Republican Army on Ulster’s border, and a mixed Catholic Protestant police ward. A second conference on Irish unity was planned.
