Jonesboro, Sept. 19. Mrs Virgie Bynum wife of Brock Bynum of this city died from a pistol shot fired by herself. A coroner jury found death by self inflicted 32 calibre revolver shot amid a quarrel when her husband refused to let her leave a neighbor's house during a rainstorm.
In Augusta, Charles B. Mills Jr and Sadie Mae Cook eloped to Memphis on the early Eastbound train and wed there by Rev. Johnson, returning on the evening train, sparking excitement among the city’s social circle.
Officials estimate that Mississippi River shifts could cut Memphis off from a water highway and ruin the Frisco bridge. Affected areas include fertile Arkansas plantations and rail profits, prompting calls for urgent action to avert disaster.
Attorney G J Grant and City Recorder J R Mayhan visited Little Rock to urge the governor to commute Wallace Grant from a pending hang judgment to life imprisonment. The governor promised a decision by Monday and no reply had been received at press time.
Major General W H Haynes former Confederate colonel and head of the Arkansas State Guard spoke at Newport on his return from Batesville. He highlighted his work organizing 30 companies and plans to add two cavalry troops. He supported the Dick bill now before the Senate and foresees a statewide encampment in Little Rock next July.
In Tron Mountain yards white steel workers backed by a strike against black workers ended after Yard Foreman Tom Troy pledged to separate the groups and reassign the negroes to the lower yards two miles away. The action was approved yesterday afternoon.
The White River railroad extension advances to fifteen miles beyond Penter's Bluff but faces delays from Bishop's Branch bridge construction. Grading continues with available crews and teams, aiming to run cars to Buffalo City by January 1. Sickness among workers slows progress as Chief Engineer Rohwer and Devereux survey routes beyond Buffalo to bypass Lee's Mountain.
A Rock Island corps under A L Clark reached West Plains Missouri and crossed the Frisco, planning two lines toward Newport and the North Arkansas mining district to Fort Smith, creating a St Louis link with the Choctaw and Gulf if built. Chief Engineer Beard praises the survey and anticipates construction.
An early morning collision near Choctaw City between a freight engine and the Sells & Downs circus train left two dead and twenty six injured all on the show train. Rescue crews removed victims as the freight crew blamed poor visibility in rain and darkness.
B W Hatner and Jule West narrowly escaped a rabid mad dog on Rommel Avenue near Pine Street. The animal, frothing and violent, was shot after West retrieved a gun from a barn. The dog came from Chastain Addition and may have infected other animals. exposed pets should be watched for the rabies danger period.
Spent honeymoon here in this city then left on the noon train Friday for their new home in Little Rock where the groom practices law as partner of Judge T. J. Oliphant. The bride formerly Miss Georgia Crow of Searcy. The wedding was in Searcy at the Methodist church with Rev. P. R. Knickerbocker officiating.
Two railroad hands drowned when their small craft sank near the mouth of Rocky Bayou last Thursday evening. Their bodies were recovered Friday and Saturday and buried by the Railroad Co. The names were not learned. The Melborne Register warns inexperienced travelers to hire a guide for White river from Buffalo City to Newport.
In federal court at Little Rock Judge Trieber overruled the demurrer in the railroad case G. W. Hunter versus H. A. Robbins and The People's Bank of Searcy. Robbins, former treasurer, and the bank kept $7,000 from Hunter. A compromise funds transfer is expected immediately.
Frank Heintzman, about 45, died in Beaumont Texas after leaving Newport two years ago to go to Kansas City. He formerly ran a butcher shop for George Stephens then for himself. He was married to the adopted daughter of Charles Matthews.
The governor declined to change the first degree murder verdict of Wallace Grant, sentenced to be hanged on September 26 1902. He refused requests for clemency while scaffolding preparations proceed in Newport with limited witnesses and private execution expected between sunrise and sunset.
M Wambaugh chief engineer of the St Louis Memphis and South eastern railroad led a survey in Little Rock for the Erb road extension from Newman Erb to Little Rock. The crew works from Kerrs Station Lonoke county and will move to North Little Rock. Towns touched include Newport Augusta and Des Are. The company has backing capital to construct the line.
J. Rages, the defendant charged with breaking into the Burkett residence, was released Friday afternoon after arraignment before Justice G. L. Robinson. He faced a petit larceny charge but the prosecution failed to file a bond for coats. G. L. Grant acted as his attorney.
