Expensive Construction Work On White River Extension
In Joplin Missouri on March 21 a workforce of 3000 men and 200 mules began work on tunnels along the White River extension of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The tunnels exceed 2500 feet, with total tunneling for the project around 8900 feet and 15000 feet of lumber for trestles. Superintendent Engstrom says the effort will take two years and highlights modern camps offering hospitals stores dining rooms and quarters for engineers foremen and laborers.

Memphis News reports an early flood tied outbreak of buffalo gnats across river bottom and highland farms. The pest inflicts severe bites on cattle horses and deer, causing swelling and death within hours or days if untreated. Narrow Escape From Drowning In Jacksonport
The seventeen month old daughter of Daniel L. Massey fell from a plank into water while playing with siblings. Her ten year old brother Ernest pulled her from the water, reviving her after apparent drowning. While rescuers worked to warm her, a roof fire began at the house and nearly caused a total loss.
