Also, about fifty Negroes met and nominated a county ticket of Black candidates pledging support to insurgent candidate Charles D. Greaves.

James Johnson Martin Dies in Newport After Illness
James Johnson Martin died at his daughter’s home in Newport at 9 o clock Monday morning after about two weeks of illness. Born in Paris Tennessee in 1840, he moved to Memphis as a young man, married Sally E Street in 1864, and came to Arkansas in 1879 to Bradford then Newport eleven years ago to work as a bookkeeper. Eight children were born, four living. he served two terms as justice of the peace and was permanent secretary of Newport Lodge No 71 I C C F. The funeral will be held tomorrow with Rev C Cline officiating.

Notorious Harry Cunningham Shot by Railroad Night Watchman
Malden Missouri telegram dated July 18 reports Harry Cunningham, once a feared figure, fatally shot by Sam Blanton, a railroad night watchman. Cunningham and an accomplice attempted to loot a freight car under a transfer shed. Blanton ordered surrender, Cunningham drew a weapon, and Blanton fired, wounding him in the breast. Cunningham survived noon today but the wound was deemed fatal. Blanton secured the other burglar and awaited trial for burglary and larceny.
