Man named Maxfield struck by Batesville train near Moorefield

Bowen Burglarized Store Loots Cash Drawer and Groceries
Otto M. Bowen's shop was burglarized Thursday night. Intruders pried open the rear stairway door and removed a window to access the back area, stealing about 325 in groceries and 25 in tobacco and cigars while the cash drawer and safe were left largely intact. The lights were out to avoid detection, and no clues were reported to identify the burglars.

Drowned in the Black River near Elgin
A 28 year old Turkerman man named Taylor drowned while swimming with clothes on in the Black River several miles above Elgin Friday morning. Rescue efforts found no body by Saturday morning as an under current dragged him under. William Riley Bales Dies After Brief Illness
William Riley Bales died at his Laurel street home Friday morning June 28 after a one week illness described as non dangerous until the last hours. Born May 22 1874 near Cave City he lived in Independence County before moving to Batesville and then the city. He was married June 7 1891 to Maud Agner and leaves a wife Daisy. also his brother James and sister Mrs. Sarah Marshall. Interment will be in Cave City with services by Rev. Z T Bennett. He was a Methodist and held in high esteem by family, friends, and coworkers at W B Chastain where he worked as a bookkeeper.
