Death of W. L. McDonald on his forty fourth birthday
William L. McDonald died at his Hazel and Fifth Streets home in the early hours of June 27 1902 from apoplexy after a hot day and lawn work. He was born June 27 1858 near Weld and later lived in Newport. Survived by his wife Cora Conner and one child, with a funeral at his home led by Rev. J. W. Smith and burial in Weldon. Elegant Stag Affair Remains A Surprise Banquet
Mr H Bernstein and guest Mr Max Weisel were honored guests at a surprise banquet hosted by Mrs Bernstein at the Hazel Hotel. The dining hall spread featured fried chicken turkey lamb ham tongue potato and chicken salads ice cream cake coffee nuts and raisins. Port Rhine wines and Lemp's Extra Pale accompanied the feast as cigars circulated. Toasts in merry vein followed with Mr J M Stayton as host. Ducks described as browned to a fault capped the meal.

State News Notes Burglary and Pardon Headlines
Ten residences were entered by burglars Monday around 2 A M at Clarendon. A woman at one location was badly beaten by a burglar. Chairman H L Remmel paid 377 50 into the state treasury for regular nominees to appear on the September ticket. Gov Davison heard arguments on John Blair of Boone County seeking a pardon for a 13 year penitentiary sentence for killing Chase Miller at Harrison. The governor will decide today after hearing both sides. Eleven convicts escaped from Doyleton stockade Sunday night. one is white and the rest are Negroes. Henry Wool follx, another convict and a Negro, was convicted as an accessory in a murder in Jefferson circuit court. Doyleton lies twelve miles west of Pine Bluff. The convicts, used to work the road, fled the stockade.

Freight train wreck kills fireman near Forrest City
Early Monday a Choctaw freight engine struck a cow near Round Pond eleven miles east of Forrest City and derailed. Fireman Charles Gilliland died at the scene. his body found after hours. Engineer Sid Moore was badly scalded but expected to recover. The wreck delayed the eastbound fast mail from Memphis, which arrived two hours late. Gilliland, a respected Southerner from North Little Rock, was about to wed. Remains to be interred at Wynne. Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen members planned to attend.
