Brutal murder rocks city as husband shoots wife on hotel porch
John Bailey a laborer, enraged by jealousy and divorce threats, shot Mary Bailey on the Range Hotel rear porch after confronting her about divorce. After firing seven shots he attempted suicide, was wounded, and is in jail. Mary Bailey died later. The case traces through their troubled marriage dating from Argenta and Little Rock to Newport.

Body of Walter Harrison Recovered After Drowning
Walter Harrison drowned in the White River below the Stephens farm at Auvergne on Friday August 16. His body was found Sunday afternoon by T. J. Boone and Griffin on a bar near Deitz mill six miles below Auvergne. Remains were taken to Newport and prepared for burial by R. F. Drummond. Funeral services were held Monday at Walnut Grove cemetery at 9:30 conducted by Rev. James H. Brooks with many friends and relatives in attendance.

Detained man implicated in hog killings linked to Texas trip
Clarence Hodges and William Gray, two Independence county youths from near Batesville, arrived in town on Monday. Hodges was arrested by R W Bandy under Sheriff Hinkle’s instruction and sent to Newark on Tuesday to face Independence county authorities. He is accused with his father of killing a neighbor’s hogs, the informant stating the arrest stemmed from malicious motives. Gray accompanied him back.

Trains in two weeks for extension to Poplar Bluff
W L Killebrew contractor for the Southern Missouri and Arkansas extension spoke in Newport on Friday. He said the 8 M and A line nearing completion and due to reach Poplar Bluff within two weeks, with the Poplar Bluff to Pocahontas fifty one mile segment awarded to J H McCarthy of Little Rock to start at once. He also predicted the line would soon extend to Newport as an objective survey point and connect with Pocahontas soon. He urged Newport citizens to show interest to speed the extension.

Drowned at Anvergne River Death of Walter Morrison
Walter Morrison of Conway died while visiting Caele at Anvergne during a fishing trip with his uncle Forrest Blake and friend Jimmie Blackburn. Both boys could not swim. Morrison perished after grabbing his rescuer and the uncle, Blakely, could not save him. Morrison was fifteen, nearly sixteen, with a birthday on Saturday August 17. His parents learned of the tragedy Friday night as they traveled to Newport and then to Auvergne by Choctaw.

Coffins of Confederate Veterans Moved from River Bank
During the Civil War near Paroquet a clash between Curtis and Street forces left eight Confederate soldiers buried along the White River bank. Erosion revealed the graves as the river changed course, prompting Confederate veterans to hire G. A. Lockard to relocate five coffins containing veterans’ ashes to the city.

Relic bones moved from Paroquet buried again nearby
G A Lockhard, hired by Paroquet ex Confederates, brought Civil War veterans bones to the city late Tuesday. Most bones decayed to dust while two silver half dollars, two minnte balls and three bullets were found. The remains were reburied in Walnut Grove cemetery by four comrades in the gray, Minor Jones Dillard and Daniels. A slab will bear the inscription Four Confeds Sweet's Regiment Texans Killed 1862 Paroquet Bluff.
