Elbert L. Watson dies at 81 in Jacksonport legacy endures
Elbert Lycurgus Watson one of Jackson County’s oldest settlers dies at 8:30 PM Thursday after sudden illness July 30 1901. Born 1819 in Hawkinsville Georgia he built wealth in Arkansas with Pool Watson and later owned property in Little Rock and elsewhere. Survived by wife Elizabeth J. Watson and five children, his funeral was held at his home and he was buried in Elmwood Cemetery Memphis after interment by Tron Mountain. Watson served as captain and quartermaster in the Eighth Arkansas Infantry during the Civil War and was known for honesty energy and generosity.

They will reside in a cottage in Chastain's Addition. The bride a blue eyed blonde met the groom on a Newport visit last summer. The groom is a painter with many local friends who extend congratulations.

Horst Thief Caught After Swifton Arrest
Jobe Winkle was arrested Saturday in Swifton on charges of stealing Ashley Weatherford's horse at Grand Glaise on Jane 1st night. The owner issued a broad description and reward, the horse later surfaced with liveryman James Hardy of Batesville who lost the purchase price when it proved stolen. Joe Hinkle, who sold the horse, remained elusive until a debt remittance request traced to a Grand Glaise contact brought sheriff R W Bandy to Swifton, where Hinkle is jailed.

Arrest of George Farris on rape charge in city
George Farris was arrested Friday morning by Sheriff R W Bandy and jailed. Sheriff Hin kle of Independence county had telephoned to hold the prisoner for Stone county authorities who sought him on a rape charge. Farris was with his brother, recently released from the penitentiary, en route to testify in a separate investigation at Little Rock.
