SEATTLE AP Republican Chairman George Bush warned that Nixon appearing before the Senate Watergate committee would diminish the presidency. He said Nixon should not be made to testify and that even voluntary testimony could harm the office.
The Right Rev Msgr Francis Walsh 4 died Thursday in New York City. He served as vicar general of Catholic chaplaincy under Cardinal Spellman. He previously led St Gabriel Church and served in World War II and the Korean War. He leaves numerous relatives and was a cofounder of Walsh Brothers Furniture.
The Nesport based destroyer Purdy is retired after 38 years of service ending at Pier Two. Commissioned 1944 at Bath Iron Works she survived an attack by 30 enemy aircraft during World War II earning the Navy Unit Commendation. She saw action in Leyte Gulf Okinawa Korea and the Cuban and Dominican crises before a final decommissioning ceremony.
Councilman George D. Weaver proposes using the Navy YMCA building on Washington Square as a convention hall and satellite facilities. A July 11 vote will decide feasibility with Navy Y director E P Young. If used, Navy services could be trimmed but rent for space may occur while servicemen needs are weighed. The landmark building, built in 1911, has 111 rooms and five stories with substantial space and a basement.
Neale D. Murphy was elected president of the Dainestown Rotary Club with retiring president Benjamin F. Watson thanking members for their work. New officers include Herbert Craig as vice president Captain Pieter Hinkamp secretary Edward J. Welch treasurer and board members Watson David S. Martin Richard E. Waters Jerry L. McIntyre Cmdr. James Murphy Lawrence W. Monroe editor of The Windmill and L Sanford Crowell publisher. Installations planned next Thursday by Wes Vokey.
Eighteen-year-old Bob Caprera posted a round-leading two under par 67 to lead the Northeast Amateur Invitational Golf Tournament despite driving winds and heavy rain. Caprera, a sophomore at Duke University and medalist in the prior Massachusetts Open, sits two strokes behind leaders Steve Groves and Bet Crenshaw.
A mattress dive on the third floor at 24 Perry Street drew firemen at 6 14 a m today. Smoke filled the house. occupants include William Lacrey. Nancy A Viasaty, daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Viasaty, won second place in the National Baton Twirling Association event at the University of Rhode Island and placed fourth in Miss J R I swaisrette. She also attended a three day all state twirling camp and earned best all round student. St Columba s Chapel services in Middletown will combine at 1 a m tomorrow. Childbirth classes begin July 10 at Seamen s Church Institute with six weekly sessions. registrar Mrs W J Herst. A new 4 H club is forming in Portsmouth for knitting and crocheting open to ages 7 to 19, applications at Cooperative Extension Service. St Mark s Women s Club Jamestown will host a Strawberry Social Sunday 2 to 4 p m on church lawn.

Former White House aide John Ehrlichman says he can trip up John Dean III with logs of meetings. He claims Dean sought to implicate Nixon to dodge prosecution and notes Ehrlichman’s role at the pivot point of the cover up. Dean testified that Ehrlichman and Haldeman knew of the plan to harass enemies. Ehrlichman counters that the logs will expose the scope of the effort and denies advance knowledge of the 1971 burglary plot.
The Newport Music Festival plans a July 25 to August 5 series in Newport with a highlight on August 2 as the Swiss Village debuts on the Arthur Curtiss James estate for a benefit by the Friends of the Newport Music Festival. The outdoor Le Chalet Suisse opera show features Swanhurst Choral Society and festival artists under Wayne Ward, with gala activities and a $30 deductible ticket.
Irene Cooper reported her 1967 Chevrolet WW-133 stolen from a lot at St Marys Church on Spring Street. Lobsters worth 80 dollars were stolen from a car near The Ledges on Ocean Avenue. Howard G. Cushing said 27 lobsters were taken from a vehicle by Price's Neck.
Three Navy personnel suffered injuries when a car driven by Norwood A Sharp struck them on Memorial Boulevard and Rhode Island Avenue. Sharp was hospitalized for finger cuts while his three passengers received head and face injuries. A second crash on Coddington Highway involved Ernest L Carpenter who was cited for DUI after his car damaged turf and front end. Other DUI cases and a hit and run left one vehicle damaged with no injuries.
