Newport Fourth of July Celebrations Focus on Charter Anniversary

Newport's Washington Square hosts Fourth of July activities expanded for a fourth year under Washington Square Roots. The centerpiece is the 350th anniversary of the Rhode Island Charter granted by King Charles II in 1663 to John Clarke. The day includes a 11 a.m. reading on the Colony House steps, sponsored by the Sons of the Revolution and the Artillery Company of Newport, and a special insert in The Daily News detailing Celebrate Charters of Freedom and a proposed Charter Park.
