Motorcycle Priest Gerald Baker Dies at 30 in Providence
The Rev. Gerald A. Baker, 30, known as the motorcycle priest of South Providence, died Sunday night at St. Joseph's Hospital after being found unconscious June 12 in his room. An autopsy is pending, with results due in about two weeks. He served at St. Michael's Church in Providence and was active in urban parish work and diocese committees. The funeral plans include a Mass at St. Michael's with Bishop Russell J. McVinney. He is survived by his parents, a brother, and several relatives.

Three Hurt In Accident In Portsmouth Police say three injured
Three persons were injured yesterday afternoon when their car hit a utility pole on East Main Road in Portsmouth. Mrs Mary Murphy 28 Fall River driving north sprained her right arm. Her two year old son Shawn sustained multiple scrapes. Loretta Hanson 28 Anoka Minnesota received a cut on the head. All were taken by Portsmouth Fire Department rescue wagon to Newport Hospital treated and discharged. Mrs Murphy's car damage about 1400 dollars. A second collision at West Main and Stringham Roads injured two drivers Clarence Johnson Portsmouth and Philip Kiklis Silver Avenue. Johnson car about 300 dollars damage Eilts car about 400 dollars damage.

Poll shows favor to income tax in Providence poll
In Providence the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce released a poll of 2,600 mailed ballots showing about 26 percent returned. Chamber president Peter Burgher said results align with the chamber’s long-standing stance on tax reform. The poll asked voters to consider two propositions: A proposing a graduated personal income tax and B advocating basic taxation reform to eliminate undesirable taxes before any new forms.
