The Underwood School in Newport ends its long history today as the city’s four elementary schools close for good. PreK through fourth graders will transfer to Pell Elementary on Dexter Street this September. The four-unit campus, built in 1962, was known for its village feel and ties to Fort Adams and Naval Station Newport families.
Newport four elementary schools will close this week as students move to the new Pell Elementary School this fall. Rhode Island House members left the State House after a late night debate over the $8.2 billion budget and whether to fund debts from Curt Schilling's 38 Studios. Speaker Gordon Fox recessed the chamber as rank and file lawmakers blocked a leaders’ plan to skip a $12.9 million pension contribution, arguing against underfunding the pension while supporting the failed investment.
