Newport councilman at large candidate Stephen Bruce Murray urged starting Bicentennial plans now for 1976 the nation's 200th independence anniversary. He proposed a Bicentennial Commission with local groups including Alliance Francaise and black community representatives to spark restoration of colonial buildings and a national essay contest. He suggested outdoor pageants and a Chamber of Commerce promotion to highlight Newport's colonial character.

Visions Awarded 45000 Grant For Newport County Plan
The Office of Economic Opportunity awarded New Visions of Newport County a 41000 emergency food and medical services grant. William H. Pimental said the 23 month food cooperative program will begin July 1 with planning in the first three months and a staff including a nutritionist and a nutritional aide. The project aims to coordinate with supermarkets, ensure county schools have a proper lunch program, promote food stamps, and expand other food programs while leaving as much impact as possible.
