Chafee Admits Stopping Navy Base Cuts
Former Rhode Island governor and secretary of the Navy John H. Chafee confirmed to a Newporter that he blocked military cuts in Rhode Island and Massachusetts while in the Pentagon. David Leys, president of Newport County Chamber of Commerce, said he spoke with Chafee en route to Providence and that Chafee offered no comment on hearings. Leys criticized Navy officials testimony supporting the cutbacks as inadequate and said the plan would harm local economies and national security long term.

A 1970 Rhode Island School of Design graduate and fiddler with Eddie Zack and the Outlins he was born in Colorado son of Jean McKibbin Reading Dorland and the late David Ht Reading. Cremation was held at Swan Point Cemetery Providence. memorial service to be held at 7 tonight in the United Methodist Church.
