House Ways and Means Rejects Cigarette Tax Cut Plan
Washington June 19 The House Ways and Means Committee voted 13 to 12 to reject cutting the federal tax on economy cigarettes and left open a plan to raise corporation taxes by about 500 million dollars annually. The panel tentatively set a 4.9 cent pack tax for cigarettes retailing 12 cents or less, but scrapped that decision. Chairman Boughton argued the cut would reduce revenue by about 90 million annually. President Truman favors wartime excise cuts with offsetting tax increases.

Pleads Guilty To 60 Count Charge In Gambling Case
New York June 13 Frank Erickson boss of a nationwide multimillion dollar bookmaking empire pleaded guilty to gambling charges that could send him to prison for 60 years. He faced 60 counts with possible penalties totaling 60 years and 36000 in fines. His attorney said the plea included one conspiracy count and 59 counts of bookmaking.
