A record 168 yachts started from Brenton Reef Light to Bermuda at 1 pm under 20 knot southerly winds. The 25th Newport to Bermuda race features entrants from 25 foreign valyers aiming to end US dominance. New handicap system uses elapsed times and computer ratings post race to determine allowances, replacing pre-race handicaps.
