City awards seawall repair contract and related works
Newport city council awarded a contract to F. Petrarce & Sons of Portsmouth at 9.95 per foot for Washington Street seawall repairs. Work will start after curb work on Marlborough Street and West Broadway. Repairs near the Gen Rochambeau statue in King Park also planned. A $900 transfer from reserves will repaint and clean the Roderick Verry Cairn. Additional bids: Maxima Motor Division for an aerial ladder truck at 848,882. Johns Manville Sales for asbestos cement pipe at 22,265 less 2 percent. R and D Construction for chimney work at Edward King House at 4,740.

Mechanic Falls From Ladder On Newport Garbage Truck
A year-old mechanic suffered a hip fracture yesterday after a bolt split, sending sheet metal from a Safeway Systems garbage truck at 215 Third St. Anthony Toppa of JA Third St. was on the ladder repairing the rear compressing mechanism when the bolt failed. He was transported to Newport Hospital by the rescue squad and listed in good condition this morning.

Poor Driving Brings Charges in Tiverton Court
Gene Reed of Tiverton pleaded innocent in District Court today to disorderly conduct driving without a license and invalid plates and resisting arrest. Judge Orme set bail at 80 dollars with trial scheduled for July 2. Police accosted Reed on Eagleville Road early today. John Kesrewski, 43, of Portsmouth admitted guilt for driving under the influence and was fined 100 dollars. Funeral services for Joseph M. Martin of Jamestown were held at St. Mark's Church with burial in St. Mark's Cemetery. Additional notices include births at Naval Hospital and Newport Hospital, and a funeral for Frank T. Rose in Bristol Kilrs.

Musician Contends Fronton is Unsuitable For Concerts
