Two Banks Petition Against City Official
In Providence US District Court two banks filed mortgage foreclosure petitions against Councilman Richard S. Phelps and his wife Margaret. Seaport County Trust Co and Savings Bank of Newport seek foreclosures on multiple properties including land at 7 to 8 Broadway. New England Merchants National Bank of Boston claims a mortgage for $33,000 on the same property. The petitions were filed May 3.

PR Men To Offer Courses At Newport Institute
The American Alamai Newport Institute opens next week at the Tresdwar Inn with a 25 member faculty from colleges nationwide. Brown University figures prominently with Robert Reich and other alumni leaders among the guest lecturers guiding a first national program in alumni administration, educational fundraising, and communications. City Budget To Get Final Reading Tonight In City Hall
City budget enters final reading with council expected to adopt tonight. Last week’s first reading trimmed several items including court budget cuts. Veteran Frank T. Rose Dies at 99 in Bristol
Frank T. Rose 99 a Newport native died last night at Au Veterans Home in Bristol after a long illness. He served in the First Armored Tank Corps at Fort Benning and later in the medical corps, then as a supply clerk at the Naval Supply Depot in Coddington Cove. Born July 2, 1917, son of John P. Rose and Christina Rosewey, he is survived by sister Mrs Javita Lewis and brothers Albert Joseph Rose and others. Funeral from O'Neill Funeral Home to St Marys Church for mass at 11 a.m. Burial in St Columba Cemetery.

Despondent Tiverton man foiled in bridge plunge attempt
A 4 year old Tiverton man attempted suicide by jumping from Mount Hope Bridge. His family warned Portsmouth police after seeing a car stop mid span. Officers seized the driver who asked for medical treatment and he was taken to Rhode Island Medical Center in Cranston. His family said he had been despondent and had threatened to jump previously.
