In Chicago's Puerto Rican neighborhood violence erupted Sunday as a youth was shot by Patrolman Thomas Munyon. Rioters looted, damaged cars, and hurled rocks, injuring around two dozen and causing more than 30 arrests as police and a K9 unit battled crowds near Division and Damen.
Superior Court Judge Arthur A. Carrellas told a newly empaneled jury that delays stem from the state not increasing its Superior Court judges since 1931. He warned that without swift conferences, the courts could extend to 96 hours of sessions to clear cases. A grand jury and petit juries were named for Newport and surrounding towns, with many listed jurors and a foreman from Little Compton.
Voters in Middletown head to the polls for district based voting at Town Hall and Berkeley Peckham School to decide on forming a charter commission. The 23 candidates seek a charter by June 1967 to be presented at a November election, with broad town-wide votes possible in November 1967 if the plan passes.
Washington AP The Supreme Court ruled today a suspect cannot be questioned if alone and indicates he does not wish to be interrogated. Chief Justice Warren said protections against self incrimination apply unless safeguards were taken to secure rights. The decision reviews the 1864 ruling extending the right to counsel and clarifies when statements may be used in court. Justices dissented on multiple points while reaffirming the privilege and procedures for custodial interrogation.
Tropical storm Alma weakens to a tropical storm as it sprays rain along the coast to New England. Weather officials warn of rough seas at the bay entrance with northeast winds 20 to 35 knots and isolated high waves. Inland, temperatures dip to 48 degrees at Hillsgrave while Newport reports 60. Severe thunderstorm watches extend through Kansas and Missouri with reports of flooding and tornado activity in several towns.
Ella Fitzgerald headlines the Newport Jazz Festival on July 3 her first appearance here since 1957. Duke Ellington leads his orchestra and conducts a retrospective of his 40-year jazz career alongside Teddy Wilson Buddy Rich Clark Terry and Coleman Hawkins. Rich serves as festival house drummer and appears throughout the event as Clark Terry joins Skitch Hendersons Orchestra on Tonight show. Ticket sales open by mail order and at the box office.
Sunday crashes on Bellevue Avenue left two injured and extensive damage to three autos. Groton Gaudet of 1230 Main Road Portsmouth and Katharine Stelson, 15, of Tort Adams were treated at area hospitals. Gaudet’s car damage $100, Magann car $400, Marlgrave car $10. Further incidents include a motor scooter collision near Washington Street injuring Francis Carr and a two-car crash on Memorial Boulevard with minor injuries. Police logged multiple accidents with limited damage reports.
Two surfers caught in heavy waves pushed by Hurricane Alma were rescued at Newport Beach. Fireman Frank G. Moraza and Police Specialist Frederick Newlon waded to reach Joel Bemel of Long Island, New York, who was taken to Newport Hospital for treatment. A rescue boat from the Middletown Fire Department picked up the second, unnamed surfer after they were pulled from the rip current.
Nerbart C Winslow, 23, Navy man on commissary duty at a Naval Base, was charged with murder after a fight with Lawrence Phila, 22, of the destroyer Cool. Phila was wounded in the chest and died Friday afternoon. A preliminary hearing was set for Juneau with bail at 10,000. Winslow was held without bail as the murder charge was entered in place of assault with intent to murder. The case moves to Superior Court on September 12.

Paratroopers and B52 strikes followed in the central highlands while U S aircrews logged dozens of missions across North and South Viet Nam amid continuing heavy fighting and casualties.
