A fire at the Seaman's Church Institute on Market Square was described as definitely suspicious by police. It damaged the Rev Archie Burdicks office where memorabilia including a commission signed by John Quincy Adams was kept. An 11 year old dog died in a closet near the first floor snackbar as flames and smoke spread through the rector and secretary offices. Fire rekindled after noon and was put out by firefighters. Three third floor residents were evacuated around 3 am.
