Newport School for Girls graduated 34 or 44 students at a morning ceremony in Emmanuel Church due to terrace space limits. W Averell Harriman delivered the commencement address. Granddaughter Nancy Marie Whitney won art and drama honors. valedictorian Carol Abby Wise earned multiple awards for academics and leadership.

Elmhurst Academy Holds Commencement In Chapel

Elmhurst Academy of the Sacred Heart awarded diplomas to 46 girls at the 98th commencement in the Portsmouth school chapel. Most Rev Bernard M Kelly presided and urged graduates to pursue service, with several students earning named awards for merit and leadership.

Governor Williams said a state investigation found Jackson State College officers acted in self defense during a confrontation on May 15. Providence RI to name education commissioner soon

Providence Rhode Island is poised to appoint a new commissioner of education within the month. Board of Regents chairman Dennis J. Roberts said interviews are ongoing with seven candidates from a screening panel, with all having been interviewed at least once. The appointee will lead a new department overseeing elementary through higher education, replacing the current dual system.

Young Boy Dies After House Fire In ENYIELA Conn

A year-old boy named Charles Layton died of smoke inhalation and burns about an hour after being rescued from a fire in ENYIELA. Off-duty firefighter Dennis Haberman crawled into a smoke filled second floor to save him. The blaze began at 1 36 pm as the Layton family slept. the father John refused to leave until convinced otherwise.

Driver Denies Three Charges in District Court
