A high altitude weapon test using a large plastic balloon carried a device and detonated, generating a pair of bright flashes and a brief fire. Officials from ARC reported 45 experiments including 18 aircraft missions, with the next shot planned from a balloon.
In Newport Superior Court Judge Fred R. Perkins heard a petition by Capt. John F. Watterson Lt. Frford La Mosher and Fireman Francis J. OConnell seeking reinstatement to deputy chief captain and lieutenant posts. They argue former City Manager William A Gildea promoted them on July 21 1958 and council later removed them to their prior ranks The petition aims to unseat City Manager John F Phelan appointees Deputy Chief Andrew M Campbell Capt Brian J Cooney and Wt Philip C. Nagle who had been installed during Gildes suspension The court reserved ruling and the incumbents Campbel Cooney and Nagle continued in place while the petitioners await decision.
Providence reports Vieti Attobson of Westerists is restored as chief of the state Division of Mor ets after the Persons Appeal Beard ruled the dismissal improper. The ruling orders rehearing and notes the prior findings and the contention that Jacobson’s conduct disrupted others. The case stemmed from alleged misconduct and questions about fitness for duty.

A court martial in San Antonio reduced A. C. Willian Roberts Jr to one rank lower and fined him 50 dollars a month for two months after convicting him of mistreating a basic trainee. Trainee Robert Dinsenbacher, 20, of Astoria New York, was pulled from his bunk and struck from the incident. Dinsenbacher died two days later. Roberts was not tried for his death.

A leak in the Lawton Valley reservoir near Lawton's Valley in Portsmouth prompted pumping from St Mary's to Lawton Valley to prevent water loss. The Daly Bronson and Cotton contest delays at sea after meeting a Coast Guard cutter Barataria to pick up an injured man. The Daly will reach Fall River about 2 30 pm Friday and the Cotton will reach State Pier.
Former President Harry Truman and wife Bess share happiness at Margaret Truman Daniel giving birth to a 6 pound baby boy at Doctors Hospital New York. Margaret and Daniel, both 33 and 44, welcomed their first child as Truman says he favors no name and will await the family’s decision.
Navy Regulus guided missile from Edwards Air Force Base veered off course and crashed into the Mojave Desert in a spectacular explosion. The 33 foot missile, designed for submarines and warships, carried no warhead. No injuries or damage to facilities reported. The craft landed on a test range about 70 miles away, triggering a bright mushroom-like cloud and widespread alarm in Ridgecrest. Navy said loss of control and flight computer fault caused the accident.
The U S Weather Bureau said four tornadoes caused more than 100 deaths across the United States in the first five months of the year. Officials noted reporting improvements likely account for the apparent rise more than an actual increase in storms.
