U S fighter pilots have downed at least 34 North Vietnamese MIG jets this year as bombing resumed in April. Pentagon charts show 34 MIGs killed since January 1 while four U S planes have been shot down, most losses from antiaircraft fire.
A second anniversary Mass for Antone Janior Jr of Batension Street will be said Monday at 9 a.m. at St Mary’s Church. A 61 year old Bristol man, inspector D. Thomas Vandluok, collapsed at work shortly after midnight at the Kaiser Aluminam plant in Portsmouth and died on arrival at Newport Hospital. A Middletown couple was arraigned in District Court on charges of breaking and entering with intent to commit larceny after police caught them early this morning attempting to break into a children's clothing store on East Main Road. Judge Paul J. DeNeco set bond at $10,000 each after they pleaded not guilty. case continued to June 2. A private alarm alerted police, and other local incidents included a Tiverton speeding case and a Portsmouth speeding plea with fines.
Fall River AP report says police with a Holyoke warrant disrupted a claimed sex and drug orgy in an apartment. Fifteen people were arrested on lewdness and drug charges. Wayne Fulton, 23, of Fall River, later found with a gunshot wound, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital after an apparent self inflicted injury.
The Army Corps of Engineers dredge Raymond J. Fry, a 101 foot vessel converted since 1970, will be commissioned at Newport Ship Yard tomorrow at 4 30 a.m. It will operate along New England and mid Atlantic coasts to keep channels open for fishermen and pleasure boats. Attending will be Maj. Raymond Fry’s family, GW Brazier Jr and Col Richard Hesse, plus George Johnson, with city officials also present. Newport Ship Yard officials say the $1 million project created 19 jobs in its 138 year history.
The Catholic Charity Fund Appeal set an all time record of 1,207,043 dollars with Providence as headquarters. Returns from the gifts committee totaled 989,958 and parish committees 1,168,085. Bishop Lavia E. Gellneau thanked Rhode Islanders for the success. Notable contributions include St Anthony’s Church Portsmouth 4200 and Holy Ghost Fathers.
The Public Works Department announces sweeping routes tonight Broadway from Gould Street to One Mile Corner. Tomorrow night sweep targets Clarke Colonial Charles Duke Ramey Sherman Streets and Whitfield Place. Sunday night routes cover Mount Vernon Division High School and Pell Streets.
