Memorial Day Observance in Newport with Parade and Services
Newport marked Memorial Day with a 1 PM parade starting at Equality Park led by the Newport Artillery Company. Sen. Claiborne Pell and state Sen. Joseph Chaves were honored as grand marshal, with bands from Portsmouth High, Thompson Junior High, and Rogers High. Attendees included veterans groups, youth organizations, and a few hundred at Island Cemetery for the service where Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was read and a 21-gun salute fired by the National Guard.

Rose Going To Boston Replica Warship Leaves Newport
Rose, a replica of a British man o war that patrolled Narragansett Bay during the Revolutionary War, will depart Newport for Boston with owner John Millar saying he will keep the vessel. Built in Nova Scotia, the Rose was a tourist draw berthed at Long Wharf in Boston after a Coast Guard curtailment limited Newport berthing. A volunteer crew will sail her to Boston, with the shipyard in Newport since last fall and Millar continuing as owner.
